Single-deck patience

Solitaire

The game everyone already knows, built the way it should have been: cards you can throw across the table, a deck that only deals boards which can actually be won, and unlimited undo so a wrong turn costs you nothing but a moment.

How to play

Build the four foundations up from ace to king, one suit to a pile. In the seven columns below, build downwards in alternating colours — a red six onto a black seven — and move a run of cards as one whenever it already alternates. Only a king may take an empty column, which is what makes column space worth fighting for.

Deals that can be won

Roughly one Klondike deal in five cannot be won by anybody, however well they play. Before it deals, Solitaire searches for a board it has already found a solution to, so being stuck means you missed something rather than that the shuffle beat you. You can turn that off in settings if you would rather take the deck as it comes.

Two players, one device

Duel puts both players on the same table, taking turns. You keep the turn for as long as your moves send a card home or turn one over; five moves that do neither hands the table over. Relay deals both players the identical board, one after the other, and compares the scores.
